Facebook's next hardware launch will be its long-awaited Ray-Ban smart-glasses!

Mark Zuckerberg is serious this time and has confirmed that smart glasses developed in cooperation with Ray-Ban will be the company’s next hardware release. However, he again did not reveal when this will happen.

It has now been almost a year since Facebook’s Hugo Barra teased a cooperation with Ray-Ban on Twitter. The partners had announced smart glasses for 2021 that would follow a classic design line.

Since this tweet from Hugo Barra, however, very little visible has happened. Skeptics had long since written off the smart glasses. However, the massive increase in the number of employees at Facebook’s Reality Labs division clearly speaks against it. The employees responsible for the hardware around virtual and augmented reality, Facebook has expanded the Reality Labs from 1,000 to 10,000 employees.

What can we expect ?

The Smart-glasses from Ray-Ban in collaboration with EssilorLuxottica that enable some “pretty cool things,” according to Zuckerberg. What those features are is not known. However, Facebook has already confirmed that the glasses will not have an integrated display. The company has been working on such a device for a long time and has been pushing its efforts through its Project Aria research department, also known as the “Facebook Reality Lab,” among others, and has already produced several prototypes of AR glasses. But Zuckerberg describes the launch of the Ray-Ban gadget as part of Facebook’s “journey to full augmented reality glasses in the future.”
